How to use Google Shopping to get a great deal

Do you know whether the item you want to buy is a good deal? You can find out by comparison shopping with Google Shopping, formerly called Froogle.

Our ClarkDeals.com team uses Google Shopping with other comparison pricing methods to find and post the best bargains from around the web.

How Google Shopping works

To use Google Shopping, all you need is a general category you want to research or the name of an item you want to buy. It’s much easier to price compare when you have a precise item in mind.

To search for a specific item, use the name of the item or an identifying number, like a model number.

The model number will be in different places on different websites, but you’ll often find it in the fine print.

google shopping model number

You won’t want to use a retailer’s SKU number because the SKU is used by an individual store to organize the item in their system.

Keep in mind that Google Shopping may also show you related items when you’re searching. Typically, the first item will be an exact match for your search term, but further down the screen, you might see other things like older models or other relevant products.

You can customize your search with different filters including price and seller.

How to spot scams and fakes

Some retailers that show up on Google Shopping are scammers who are trying to take your hard-earned money.

To identify fake sellers:

  • Read for misspellings
  • Test the website’s customer service contact info
  • Look for the company’s social media presence — especially on Facebook
  • Check for a security seal (pictured below)
google shopping security seal

You can also go to the Better Business Bureau to help you to determine whether the site is reputable and to see if they have customer complaints.

How to know if you’re getting the best deal

So how do you know if you’re getting a great price? Well, you’ll only know if you do your research.

One thing to keep in mind: Google Shopping is not going to show you the price of an item after a coupon is applied.

Retailers often have coupons that may make the price even cheaper than the lowest-priced item found using this tool.

You may also find extra discounts by using a Google Chrome extension like Honey that applies coupons it finds to your shopping cart. You can also use website-specific trackers like the Amazon price tracker CamelCamelCamel.

These and other browser extensions are a great way to keep track of items you’re interested in buying or may purchase multiple times.

Final thought

Comparison shopping can add up to big savings over time, so always make sure to take the extra step.

Even though Google Shopping won’t always show you the whole picture, it’s a great tool for price comparisons. Of course, you can also find the best deals by visiting ClarkDeals.com and signing up for our deal alerts.

Everything you need to know about Amazon Prime Day 2019

Mark your calendars for July 15 because one of the biggest shopping days of the year — like Black Friday in summer — is just around the corner: Amazon Prime Day.

Last year, Amazon offered more than one million deals globally to Amazon Prime members. (The company also experienced a major crash on Prime Day 2018, which they have promised to fix before the next shopping event.)

To help you sort through the avalanche of promotions, the deals experts at ClarkDeals.com dedicate countless hours to find the absolute best prices from reputable retailers — especially during big events like Prime Day, Black Friday and more.

Is Amazon Prime Day really a good time to find great deals? We interviewed a deals expert to find out…

Amazon Prime Day 2019: Everything you need to know

1. What is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is an annual deals event for Amazon Prime members — and it keeps getting bigger every year. During Prime Day, the online retailer regularly releases exclusive offers and sales, and a few notable deals start rolling out in advance of the official date.

Amazon launched the first Amazon Prime Day to celebrate the company’s twentieth anniversary in 2015. The press release announcing the event also heavily advertised that prices would beat Black Friday sales. (We’ll let you know if that’s actually true below…)

In 2018, Amazon says sales surpassed Cyber Monday, Black Friday and the previous Prime Day. Prime members purchased more than 100 million products during Prime Day last year.

2. When is Amazon Prime Day?

Team Clark has independently confirmed that Amazon Prime Day is July 15, 2019, and will last for 48 hours. The shopping event officially begins on Monday, July 15 at 3 a.m. ET (12 a.m. PT) and lasts through July 16.

Amazon Prime Day is July 15, 2019

Amazon has confirmed that you can start shopping with Alexa on an Echo device Saturday, July 13:

“Can’t wait for Monday? Shop with Alexa on an Echo device beginning Saturday, July 13 to get early access to select deals on devices. Just ask, ‘Alexa, what are my deals?'”

3. Do you need to be an Amazon Prime member to shop on Amazon Prime Day?

Yes, you do have to be an Amazon Prime member to take advantage of Prime Day deals.

As of June 2019, an Amazon Prime membership costs $119 annually or you can choose the $12.99 per month plan to avoid a year-long commitment.

If you’re not already an Amazon Prime member, try the free 30-day trial to take advantage of Prime Day deals and free shipping.

Discounted Prime memberships are also available for students and low-income households.

4. What deals can you find on Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day popular deals

You can expect a ton of deals on Amazon devices and products like the Fire TV Stick remote and Echo Dot. Amazon also began offering sales at Whole Foods for Prime members on Prime Day last year.

Charis Brown, managing editor of ClarkDeals.com, has first-hand experience finding deals during Amazon Prime Day:

“We’ve seen great deals on Instant Pots, DNA and genetic testing kits, tools, name-brand headphones, car smartphone chargers, Roomba vacuums and Amazon-branded items like the Amazon Fire TV Stick and the Amazon Fire tablet.”

Deal tip: Other retailers offer deals around Amazon Prime Day

This is perhaps the best news for your wallet: You can also find deals from other stores during Amazon Prime Day!

“It’s extremely likely that other retailers will have sales to try to compete with Amazon,” says Charis. “Last year, eBay offered a $25 sitewide coupon. A few weeks after Prime Day, Walmart offered a different Instant Pot for a lower price than Amazon, so you might end up finding a better deal at a different store!”

5. Is Amazon Prime Day cheaper than Black Friday?

According to Amazon, “Prime Day is a global shopping event offering more deals than Black Friday.” Money expert Clark Howard disagrees:

“Nothing is ever as cheap as Black Friday.”

Charis notes that it definitely depends on what you’re buying: “Last year, Amazon offered the Instant Pot DUO60 7-in-1 electric pressure cooker for $59, but then for Black Friday, Walmart had the best deal on the 8-quart 6-in-1 Instant Pot for $59.”

Here’s a rule to help you determine if you should buy a deal on Amazon Prime Day or wait until Black Friday: “If you see something you like and it’s the best price it has ever been at Amazon and other stores, go for it!”

6. Do you need to wait for Amazon Prime Day to find good deals?

No! You can find deals from retailers like Amazon, Best Buy and Target on ClarkDeals.com every day.

To make sure you’re getting the best deal, research and compare prices before you purchase an item. Charis prefers Google Shopping — formerly Froogle — to compare prices between stores, but for Prime Day, “CamelCamelCamel is a must to see the price history of an item.”

Final thought: Important advice before you shop

While you can find great deals during Amazon Prime Day, it’s crucial to have a plan before you shop. Make a list now so you can stay laser-focused on finding the best deals possible!

Charis offers great advice: “Try to avoid buying something just because it’s a great deal! Buy it because you really want it or could really use it.”

Market Force review: How I earned $42 as a restaurant mystery shopper

What if you could make extra money every week eating in restaurants you’ve always wanted to try anyway? That opportunity exists with MarketForce.com.

I signed up with Market Force as a mystery shopper after another member of Team Clark told me about other ways to get paid by testing food.

How to make extra money as a mystery shopper for MarketForce.com

I was skeptical at first, but then I saw how this could be a good way to do three things I’ve always wanted to do:

  • Become a mystery shopper
  • Try some new restaurants
  • Eat for free!

What is Market Force?

Market Force helps food companies, restaurants and even wireless service providers with quality control and customer service assessments.

Those companies rely on mystery shoppers to objectively tell them how their businesses are doing, whether employees are applying their training and if their food is being prepared as it should be.

When you go to mystery shop for Market Force, you will be reimbursed for the “shopping” as well as for expenses like parking or tolls.

Full disclosure: Most of these places are fast-food restaurants, with the occasional full-service eatery thrown in. Since I’ve been doing it, I’ve eaten at places like 5 Guys Burgers, Hooters, Church’s Chicken and shopped at T-Mobile wireless stores and the like.

How to get paid to eat at restaurants as a mystery shopper

The key to getting paid is that you must keep meticulous records of your experience. Your mystery shopping experience will typically revolve around doing one of three things:

  • Confirming business hours
  • Trying the product or service
  • Taking a photo of the establishment

Let’s talk a little about each one of the above activities so you’ll know what may be involved if you choose to become a mystery shopper:

Confirm business hours

Different “shops” have certain activities that you must accomplish or fulfill. If you accept a shop that wants you to confirm the business hours of operation, many times you can do that over the phone (usually, you’ll get paid $3 to make a phone call).

Try the product (eat)

Other shops involve going into the business or restaurant and dining inside to try the food. That’s where the real money is.

With Market Force, you’ll typically get paid around $12 for a basic meal, but it could go up depending on what food items they want you to try.

Take a photo

Other times, your mystery shop may require that you take a photo of a restroom or some important signage that’s supposed to be prominently displayed.

In other instances you may have to do something as simple as ask a server where the restroom is.

How to sign up for Market Force

Market Force review: How I earned $42 as a restaurant mystery shopper

To join, go to MarketForce.com and click on the orange “Login” button under “Mystery Shoppers.”

When you sign up for MarketForce.com, you do give up a bit of personal data, including your information that allows you to be paid.

Once you’re approved, you can find shops on the site via a map. All you need to do is put in your ZIP code or one where you want to mystery shop.

Scrolling through the restaurants and other businesses on the left-side rail, you can select shops to accomplish at the times listed. Usually, there are several days and hours that you can choose from.

Mystery shopping: How not to get disqualified

Once you approve a shop and you are sent the specific details (either as a PDF or Word doc), make sure you follow it accordingly.

One of the easy ways that your shop can be disqualified is if you go to a particular restaurant at the wrong time of day.

If it’s a lunchtime shop — usually between 11:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. — and you arrive there at 4:30 p.m. you’ll basically be wasting your time and money. Market Force won’t reimburse you, even though you may have followed all of the other instructions.

Another thing that makes your shop null and void is if you fail to report the shop in a timely matter.

Market Force asks that you upload the receipt and fill out the report no longer than eight hours after you’ve left the establishment. If you exceed that time limit, again, that meal is on you.

How much money can you make as a mystery shopper?

While Market Force pays you every time you do a mystery shop, don’t think this is a full-time job. The money you’ll make can best be described as extra income.

Still, you can make quite a bit of spending money with Market Force, if you have the time. If you have a full-time job, it may be difficult finding shops that are available after office hours.

One other great thing that will determine how much money you make with Market Force is that you don’t have to accept the price they give you to shop. That’s right, you can negotiate.

Once you select a business, if you think you deserve more money for the shop, click the green “Make An Offer” button and input your desired price. If Market Force agrees, it will be accepted.

Marketforce review: How I earned $42 as a restaurant mystery shopper -Get paid to eat: How to make extra money dining at restaurants

From the above example, it will cost you $15 to eat and try the entree choice that this restaurant wants your feedback on. They are offering to pay you $5 to eat there. So you’ll be reimbursed for the $15 + $5 for the shop, meaning you’ll get $20 total for this one shop.

How often do you get paid with Market Force?

As with some other mystery shopping sites, Market Force pays monthly (the 15th of every month). That means if you do all your shops in the first few days of the month, you won’t see that check until the middle of the following month (about 45 days later).

That’s why it’s best to sprinkle in some shops throughout a 30-day period. You can get your money back quicker if you shop on the back end of the month.

Final thoughts on mystery shopping for Market Force

Market Force is a great way to passively supplement your income by doing something you’d likely do anyway. After all, we all have to eat!

The last time I used Market Force, I only “shopped” at two restaurants in the month, spending about $15 each time, and was paid $42.82. That’s not bad.

Here’s a screenshot of my haul.

As you can see, it’s no to difficult to earn a little extra money and have some fun (and maybe even a meal) at the same time!

The best credit cards for shopping rewards right now

Are you gearing up for the holiday shopping season but don’t know which credit card to use? Depending on where you shop and what you’re buying, there may be a perfect card to maximize your cash back or travel rewards. The holidays also mark a perfect occasion for applying for a new card, if you plan to use it responsibly, as Black Friday and holiday shopping purchases can help you qualify for sometimes sizeable credit card signup bonus rewards. Here are some of our favorite credit cards for shopping that may be good enough earn a spot in your wallet all year long.

If you want free travel with an annual fee of $100 or less, the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card is an excellent choice. For $95 per year, this card offers a wide range of benefits, including 2 points per dollar on travel and dining and a valuable 60,000-point signup bonus after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months after opening a new account. When redeemed through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, that is worth $750 toward travel to get you started.

The card also includes valuable purchase protections. When you pay with this card, new purchases are covered for 120 days against damage or theft up to $500 per claim. The card also gives you an automatic extended manufacturer’s warranty for up to one additional year on eligible warranties of three years or less. Between shopping protections, valuable rewards points and a big signup bonus, this is our favorite card for shopping right now.

Another Chase card, Freedom offers 5% cash back on rotating bonus categories that change every calendar quarter. This card has no annual fee and pairs well with the above mentioned Chase Sapphire Preferred. When you have both cards, you can convert cash back into Chase Ultimate Rewards at a rate of 1 cent = 1 point. You can often get more than 1 cent per point in value from Ultimate Rewards, which makes this a compelling duo.

There’s a bonus here, too. Spend $500 on purchases in the first three months for $150 in bonus cash back. That’s on top of the 5% bonus categories (limited to $1,500 in combined purchases per quarter) and an unlimited 1% everywhere else. This card offers 15-months at 0% APR for new cardholders on purchases and balance transfers. Like Chase Sapphire Preferred, this card offers purchase protection and extended warranty protection, perfect for those holiday purchases.

Most cards that offer a flat rate of cash back top out around 1.5%. But this card isn’t just any card. With Citi’s Double Cash, you get 1% cash back when you buy and another 1% when you pay your bill. That gives you an effective 2% cash back on every purchase. If you want cash back and don’t want to worry about the rotating bonus categories you see with Chase Freedom, this is arguably the best cash back card available today.

This card offers an impressive 18-month 0% APR introductory period, but don’t get tempted to build up balances you can’t afford to pay off in full. With the long 0% period, which includes balance transfers completed within four months of opening a new account, this is a good card for consolidating and paying off balances from other credit cards. It has no annual fee, but is light on benefits. This card is missing the valuable purchase protections from the two cards above. But outside of that, this is a great overall card and top option for cash back rewards.

Any longtime Clark reader or listener knows that he’s a big fan of Costco. If you want to maximize what you get back when shopping at this warehouse club, the Costco Anywhere Visa® is an excellent companion. There is no annual fee with your paid Costco membership, and you can get up to 4% cash back on bonus categories. Earn 4% on gas purchases including Costco up to $7,000 per year, 3% back on restaurants and travel, 2% at Costco and Costco.com, and 1% everywhere else. Depending on your shopping habits, that adds up to some big cash back.

This card includes 120-day purchase protection and extended warranties, which is great for a card with no annual fee. If you plan to do much of your holiday shopping at Costco, you’ll do well with this card’s 2% cash back and even more at some other popular categories. As a reminder, we only suggest using a credit card if you can pay it off in full each month. If that is a habit you can get into (or already have), the Costco Visa should serve you well.

Amazon Prime Day 2019: Top 5 ways to get the best deals!

Amazon Prime Day 2019 is quickly approaching! The online shopping event starts Monday, July 15 at 3 a.m. ET (12 a.m. PT) and runs through July 16 — that makes for 48 hours of great deals this year.

Are you ready to shop? Before you add anything to your Amazon cart, there are a few things you should know…

Amazon Prime Day 2019: How to get the best deals during the 48-hour sale!

1. Timing is everything

This year Prime Day is actually two full days, so when can you find the lowest prices? The answer really depends on what you’re shopping for.

Amazon devices like the Echo, Fire TV and Kindle will likely be discounted throughout the entire shopping event.

ClarkDeals.com managing editor Charis Brown says that the best deals don’t pop up overnight, but all other hours of the mega-sale are fair game.

In fact, some of the best TV deals in recent years went live in the final hours of Prime Day.

2. Update your address and payment information

Don’t miss out on limited-time deals because you have an expired credit card linked to your account! Update address and payment information before you start shopping.

Have an Amazon Prime credit card? You’ll get an extra 5% off all of your Prime Day purchases.

3. Download the Amazon app

If you don’t have the Amazon app on your phone, now is the time to get it. It’s the easiest way to preview and track Lightning Deals, but you may want to make your purchase on a desktop. More on that later on…

To get notified when a deal starts, tap “Today’s Deals,” then the “Upcoming” tab and “Watch This Deal” on a specific item.

4. Buy on your desktop for easy comparison shopping

Money expert Clark Howard recommends that you comparison shop every day of the year, even on Prime Day!

CamelCamelCamel is a popular site to help you check the price history of Amazon items. Just enter the Amazon URL and click search to see if you’re getting a good deal. You can even set up price alerts.

Comparison shopping takes a bit of work and requires you to have multiple tabs open, so it’s probably best to buy on your desktop.

5. Don’t forget about Whole Foods

Amazon is offering Prime Day deals at Whole Foods Market once again this year. When you spend $10 in the store or online between July 3 and July 16, you’ll get a $10 Amazon credit to spend on Prime Day.

To take advantage of this offer, just scan your Prime Code from the Whole Foods app or use your phone number at checkout.

Final thought

If you don’t have an Amazon Prime membership, you can sign up for a 30-day free trial to shop on Prime Day. Amazon Prime Student has a six-month free trial offer.

For returning members, you don’t have to pay $119 for a yearly subscription — pay $12.99 for one month of access instead.

Think about it this way: If you take advantage of the Whole Foods deal alone (spend $10, get $10), you’ll offset most of the one-month cost of Prime. Just remember to cancel it within 30 days if you don’t want to be billed again.
